Happy Registered Dietitian Nutritionist Day️!

Did you know that the word dietetics originates from the Greek word diaita, meaning ‘way of life’? True to it’s root meaning, food and nutrition is a way life and is a big part of our lives at Mondays at Racine and other “Mondays at” charter salons.

During cancer treatment, a healthy diet can make a difference on quality of life and, hopefully, will give way to a more positive outlook. After treatment, a healthy ‘way of life’ means following a healthy eating and lifestyle pattern to prevent recurrence. This includes consuming a mostly plant-based diet, high in fruits, veggies, whole grains, healthy fats, nuts and legumes. Foods to limit are added sugars, refined grains, red and processed meats and alcohol. Studies have shown plant-based diets positively impact health after cancer treatment. Life does not come with any guarantees, but there are surefire ways to help tip the odds in your favor.

Unfortunately, there’s no shortage of wrong and potentially harmful information out there. Unqualified people and sources are aplenty. Look for credentials RDN (or RD) and CDN when seeking help with your nutritional needs. RDN (Registered Dietitian Nutritionist) is the credential from the American Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics and CDN (Certified Dietitian Nutritionist) is the New York State license which, of course, requires specific professional requirements. (Note, requirements vary from state to state.) Our strong background in interpreting science and research-based studies will help you navigate through the confusing maze of nutrition information.

I hope to provide you with support and information to get you through your treatment and to inspire and empower you to help you make healthier food choices. Since there’s not a one size fits all approach, I employ creative and unique ways to meet your needs. I am part of the oncology dietitian practice subspecialty group which covers all areas of oncology nutrition. Our vast network offers support and communication and since many of us check in regularly to discuss the many questions and concerns faced by cancer patients, it enables us to better serve our cancer populations & communities. We are the public’s advocates and by reaching out to our community, we hope to promote good health and wellness!
